How to Build a Believable Human Character - Refining the Hands
Step 4 |
Time to move on to the thumb. As you can see the top and underside edge runs have been added in and extended to flow through the palm as well. At the moment we have a number of "dead-ends", resulting in 5 and 3 vertices polygons. Over time much of this will be cleaned up as the rest of the hand takes shape. Other then that a basic outline of the thumb has been done, ready to add the extra detail much like the fingers. |
Step 5 |
First we add a few more loops around the thumb to better define the overall shape. Then, just like the fingers we use the bevel tool to add detail to the knucle area. Finally and once again just like the fingers, we use bevel again a few times to mark out the nail after moving the resulting vertices around a bit. Feel few to move things around a little bit, if you need say an overall "fatter" hand or even add more edges, etc if you require very high detail hands. However for the most part this should be more then enough model detail while any extra detail can be done using textures later on.

Step 6 |
With the thumb done, some general tweaking has been applied to the main hand/palm area. Any unfinished edge runs have been extended down to the wrist but still left un-terminated. While they may be further adjusted in the future, for now they are just fine as they are. A new edge loop was added around the write area and the two main bones that extend out have been extruded. At this stage we have a pretty good hand. Depending on your exact requirements, more modelling detail may be needed (for extra creases, etc) or texturing may be all thats needed. |
