Interview with Liam Kemp

Can you introduce yourself and give us some details on your
career and education? |
My name is Liam Kemp and I'm from the United Kingdom. I went
to university to study illustration, though finding work in this area
upon graduating proved immensely difficult. And so a couple of years
went by until I was introduced to 3ds max. I quickly learned how to
use the program, and made my first animated short which was strong
enough to get me my first job at Team17 Software, where I worked as
a character animator. After 3 years at Team17 I joined Core Design
as a character modeller. Last week I left Core Design to join a new
company called Circle Studio. |
If you had to single out one skill/experience or personal
trait to be a successful CG artist, what would it be and why? |
Persistence. When, for example, your model is at the stage where
you are quite happy about the way it looks, don't be tempted to leave
it there for fear that any further adjustments may spoil your model.
You must go back in and fine-tune every area until you are thrilled
by the work you've done. |
Could you tell us a little bit about the story of 'This
Wonderful Life' and how it was developed? |
This
Wonderful Life is a tale of a young woman who, mourning the death
of her husband, takes a walk into the countryside, feeling alone and
withdrawn. Her life then changes forever upon finding a cardboard
box beneath a bridge....
The theme of the movie was something that simply grew and took
form over time. By the time I was ready to start work on the movie,
nearly everything had fallen into place by itself. The only thing
that had me seesawing between ideas was the ending.....
